Escape Dunes
Escape Dunes

On our recent trip to "The Great Sand Dunes" I was fascinated to see how much of the landscape had changed from our visit a year earlier. I don't completely understand the reason the main dune mass has stopped it's advancement toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains at the small Medano creek. I have read that It has something to do with reversing winds canceling out the advancement of the dunes. The creek does some work its self by washing back to the valley floor any sand that falls into it. Some sand finds its way across the creek and this is what they call the "Escape Dunes". You can see from the photos that the main dune mass is of a similar shape but the major change can be seen in the foreground. Its also fascinating to me how the plant life continues to survive.
